Breast Cancer on the Rise

Monday, September 4th, 2006

Since the 1940s, breast cancer has been steadily rising. It is claiming more and more lives as each year goes by. Medical researchers have various theories as to why this is happening.

One theory is that the increased use of mammography is the culprit. What most studies have found, however, is that it is not so much mammography in older women, but in younger women that is causing the damage. With extended exposure to radiation, women are more likely to develop breast cancer. The earlier you start or the more frequently you have them done, the higher your risk may be. Consider this: for every rad (radiation-abosrbed dose) a woman is exposed to, her brest cancer risk increases by 1%. That may not sound like much. But in 1976, every screening meant exposure to five to ten rads. Nowadays, women are exposed to only one rad per screening. Imagine the exposure that women had who had sveral mammographies a year. Another theory is that the rise in breast cancer is due to the rise in toxic chemicals spewed into our environment. The report, “State of the Evidence 2004: What Is the Connection Between the Environment and Breast Cancer?” presents disturbing findings. According to the report, more than 50% of breast cancer cases remain “unexplained by personal characteristics and other traditionally-accepted risk factors.”

The report includes findings form 21 different studies. Here are just a few examples of what they found:

- Chlorinated chemicals, found in drinking water and many industrial processes such as computer component manufacturing, were associated with an elevated risk of breast cancer in three new studies;
- A solvent used in many varnishes, paints, dyes and fuel additives (ethylene glycol methyl ether) was found to sensitize breast tissue cells to the effects of estrogens and progestins, thereby increasing the risk of breast cancer and;
- The Million Women Study in the United Kingdom revealed that all types of postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy significantly increased the risk of breast cancer, underscoring earlier findings from the Women’s Health Initiative study in the United States. Another study found that use of HRT after previously being diagnosed with breast cancer tripled a woman’s risk of recurrence or development of a new breast tumor.

What we can conclude from all of this is that more research, more awareness and more involvement is needed. We, as women, can arm ourselves with knowledge and maybe one day learn how to truly prevent breast cancer.
